In what he claims is a crackdown on crime, President Trump visited the police and troops stationed in the US capital on Thursday and announced that they would be there for an extended period of time.
Last week, Trump sent hundreds of National Guardsmen to station themselves in Washington, DC, with the promise to “take our capital back,” despite objections from some locals and declining violent crime figures.

Law officers from many local and federal agencies, together with National Guard forces, encircled the 79-year-old Republican.
Despite earlier Thursday’s suggestion that he join police and troops on patrol, he instead delivered a brief address and distributed pizza and hamburgers.
Trump stated, “Everybody feels safe,” and went on to say that he intends to have the nation’s capital “fixed up physically.”

The capital’s violent crime rate has at a 30-year low, according to Bowser.
A day prior to Trump’s visit, his vice president, JD Vance, had a separate encounter with troops when he was met with boos and cries of “Free DC” (a reference to Washington’s official name, the District of Columbia).
Calling the hecklers “a bunch of crazy protesters,” Vance ignored them.
Eight hundred members of the District of Columbia National Guard are being sent, with a combined total of about 1,200 soldiers being sent by Republican-led states such as Ohio, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Tennessee, and West Virginia.
Some popular tourist spots where they have been seen include the National Mall and its monuments, as well as the baseball stadium in Nationals Park.
Republicans in Congress have accused the heavily Democratic nation’s capital of being financially mismanaged, rife with homelessness, and ravaged by crime.
While there was an uptick in violent crime in the years following the pandemic, statistics from the Washington police department reveal that this was followed by a sharp decline in 2024.
Not everyone is on board with the crackdown; some say it’s needed because of the high crime rate in their neighbourhoods, while others say it hasn’t happened in the regions of Washington where the violence is most concentrated.

A number of instances involving the influx of police have gone public as locals express their dissatisfaction, with one man’s arrest being linked to footage showing him hurling a sandwich at an agent.
Posters in the style of Banksy praising the “sandwich guy” have appeared all around town.
Some have taken to social media to express their gratitude for the “critical support such as crowd management, presence patrols and perimeter control in support of law enforcement” delivered by the National Guard members.
