The government of Lagos, Nigeria, will not stand for illegal construction. Demolition is defended by APC

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State has stated that no sane administration can turn a blind eye to the risks presented by illicit buildings that endanger lives, impede progress, and jeopardise public safety.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Seye Oladejo, the party’s spokesman, stressed the importance of implementing urban planning regulations in order to keep the peace and safeguard the citizens.

Several warnings and engagement sessions were conducted prior to enforcement, according to Oladejo, who stated that the state’s demolition of unlawful buildings followed a transparent and law-driven process. He clarified that the program was meant to restore sanity to the impacted communities and prevent calamities, not be harsh.

He claims that the administration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu exhibited “restraint and compassion” by consulting with affected parties and extending deadlines for compliance multiple times before acting.

“Due process and the public interest have informed every action taken by this administration. “When illegal developments threaten infrastructure, waterways, and the environment, Lagos cannot afford to let them thrive,” Oladejo stated.

He made a point of saying that the state’s goals of safer, more planned communities, environmental sustainability, and urban regeneration are all in line with the enforcement effort.

The demolitions, Oladejo said, should not be seen as politically driven because the state’s first concern is keeping the peace and protecting people and their property.

“Just so everyone knows, Lagos is not going to take a peep show from people who don’t get that discipline, consistency, and respect for the rule of law are essential to development,” he declared.

In order to realise its goal of a robust and livable megacity, the Sanwo-Olu administration is determined to modernise infrastructure and comply strictly to planning requirements, as the spokeswoman reiterated.

Additionally, he stated that Lagos will maintain its commitment to legitimate governance, accomplish smart urban renewal, and show true compassion.

Oladejo elaborated by saying the current activities are not punitive but rather designed to keep the city from expanding beyond its permitted borders in a way that doesn’t harm the environment or its inhabitants.
