An investigation into the South East Nigerian Education Loan Fund’s (NELFund) disbursement has been launched by the House of Representatives.
During the South East Zonal Investigative Hearing at the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), Paul Sunday Nnamchi, Chairman of the Joint Committee on Student Loans, Scholarships and Higher Education Financing, Banking and Other Ancillary Institutions, Anti-Corruption, and University Education, made this known.
Nnamchi said that the committee’s job is to look into claims of wrongdoing in the loan distribution process impartially for all participating institutions.

Enugu East/Isi-Uzo Federal Constituency Professor Nnamchi said that the committee will also probe the operational procedures that govern the distribution of student loans.
He claims that the inquiry will look into whether or not the lending system is transparent, fair, and efficient, and it will also suggest measures to make sure it complies with legal and ethical frameworks.

He announced that as of Wednesday, August 6, 2025, 366,247 students from federal and state tertiary institutions have received loans totalling N86.3 billion from NELFund. Of this amount, N47.6 billion has been designated for tuition fees, and N38.7 billion has been allocated as maintenance allowances to students at more than 218 beneficiary institutions.
