SAN writes to the IGP and denies forging claims against an Abuja-based lawyer.

A senior lawyer in Nigeria, Prof. Awa U. Kalu, has written to the inspector general of police (IGP) to distance himself from claims that he forgeried documents and faked documents against Victor Giwa, a lawyer in Abuja.

Even though there was a letter, the cops have still charged Giwa.
The police said that Giwa faked the letterhead of Kalu’s law company in the charge.

But in his message to Mr. Kayode Egbetokun, the Inspector General of Police, Kalu said that his letterhead had never been fake and that he had never reported fake documents to the police.

A letter from Kalu to the Inspector General of Police on May 30, 2025, made it clear that he had not reported Giwa for supposedly forging his company’s letterhead or filed a complaint.

The letter is in reaction to Charge No. CR/150/25, which was brought by the police. Giwa is accused of using fake letterhead from Awa U. Kalu (SAN) & Partners (formerly Awa U. Kalu (SAN) & Associates) to talk to the Attorney General of the Federation.

In his message to the IGP, Kalu said, “I want to let you know that the internet is abuzz with news that a charge has been brought against the above-named gentleman, alleging that he forged my official headed paper.”

“Please note that I have not reported or filed a complaint at any police station in Nigeria saying that Mr. Victor Giwa forged my official letterhead.”

The clarification by Kalu weakens the forgery claim, which is said to be based on the unauthorised use of his firm’s name and letterhead. His words suggest that there was no official accusation from the main person whose identity was allegedly misused.

Also, in a letter dated May 24, 2025, Giwa asked Mr. Kayode Egbetokun, the Inspector General of Police, to look into claims that he was paid to go to court.

Giwa specifically asked Egbetokun to look into the claims that a false charge was brought against him and another person by the Commissioner of Police for the Legal Services of the Nigeria Police, Chiozoba Oyakhire Ehiede, and Ms. Asabe Waziri.

He also asked the IGP to look into the link between the CP, Lawyers’ Services of the Nigeria Police, and Asabe Waziri, who works for the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL).

Giwa has maintained his innocence, saying that the letter in question was sent in the course of a legal connection and did not involve any dishonesty or forgery.
