The newly hired members of the Association of Resident Doctors at the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH) in Akwa Ibom State are furious because the hospital administration has not paid them five months’ salary and has taken too long to fix their incorrectly assigned CONMESS entry level.
This was included in a communiqué that was approved by the association’s president, Dr. Promise Jacob, and general secretary, Enam-Eti Akpan, during a virtual emergency meeting that concluded on Sunday, September 5, in Uyo on Wednesday.
The association has decided to go forward with a seven-day warning strike starting at 8:00 a.m. on Monday, October 6, 2025, because the management has failed to address some of the issues stated in its previous communiqués on July 31 and October 1, 2025.

“The 2023 set of employed residents are yet to receive their accumulated salary arrears,” is one of the issues voiced by the association in the communiqué. Workloads, exhaustion, and burnout in the workplace are on the rise due to the existing staffing shortages in all departments. Despite the Works Department’s best efforts, the House Officers’ Quarters and Call Rooms are in an appalling condition.
In light of this, the association has demanded that the hospital’s administration update all resident doctors’ CONMESS scores upon hire, resend appointment letters to reflect the updated scores, pay the three members whose scores were affected by the failed biometric capture right away through the GIFMIS platform while the IPPIS platform is being corrected, and restore all members to their current grades.
In addition to the urgent need to renovate and adequately maintain the House Officers’ Quarters and Call Rooms, the association has also demanded the immediate hiring of extra resident doctors across all departments to alleviate staffing shortages and reduce workplace burnout.
While pledging to continue providing members with high-quality healthcare, the communiqué also stated that an EGM will be held when the seven-day warning strike ends to assess management’s response and decide on next steps, without compromising members’ legitimate welfare.
