Abiola Awoyeye, a member of the Osun State House of Assembly, said that the new Osun State Compulsory Treatment and Care for Victims of Gunshot Bill, 2025, will save lives and keep hospitals safe from harassment.
The politician, who represents the Ife Central State Constituency, said this in a statement after the state parliament passed the measure on October 21, 2025.
Awoyeye said that the bill’s purpose was to make sure that people who are shot in the state get medical help right away, without having to file a police report or pay a deposit first.

He noted that the law also protects hospitals and health care personnel from threats or legal problems while they are doing their jobs in an emergency.

He remarked, “The bill aims to stop the state from turning away gunshot victims.” It is a big step towards keeping people secure and protecting the value of human life, as the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) says it should be.
The legislator also said that the bill is a life-saving framework that aims to cut down on excessive red tape in emergency medical response.
“Every person, no matter what, deserves a fair chance to live.” He went on to say, “That is the spirit behind this bill.”
He said that medical professionals and people who watch the assembly from all around the state have praised the move, calling it a sign that the government cares about the safety and well-being of its inhabitants.
The statement said that citizens think the bill will stop hospitals from refusing to treat gunshot victims because they are afraid of being targeted by law enforcement.
Awoyeye added, “With this law, Osun State joins the growing list of states that are making progress in protecting human lives and keeping medical professionals safe while they work.”
He said that the new bill is in line with other laws that have been approved recently, such as the Osun State Sports Commission Establishment Bill, 2025, the Osun State Start-up Bill, 2025, and the Osun State Communal Crisis Management and Peacebuilding Bill, 2025.
The Executive Governor of Osun State, Ademola Adeleke, now needs to sign the Compulsory Treatment and Care for Victims of Gunshot Bill for it to become law.
