The former Commissioner for Information, Mr. C. Don Adinuba, has refuted rumours regarding the death of Chief Willie Obiano, the former governor of Anambra State.
The announcement of the 70-year-old former governor’s death circulated widely, particularly among the Anambra media, provoking emotional responses from several of his close associates, who maintained that he was a commendable leader and a compassionate person.
Adinuba unequivocally refuted the rumour, stating that the former governor is both alive and in good health.

Adinuba, in a press statement he signed and issued, said: “The Nigerian media have been abuzz in the last couple of hours over a rumour that the immediate Anambra State Governor, Chief Willie Obiano, has passed on in London.
This rumour lacks foundation. Chief Obiano resides in Texas, United States, rather than London. He is not only alive but also healthy, robust, and remarkably nimble for an individual who has recently reached the age of 70.
We express gratitude to individuals from diverse backgrounds worldwide for their keen interest in the previous governor, whose generosity and record of service delivery are commendable by any measure.
The global expression of affection in response to the rumour illustrates Chief Obiano’s significance to many, nearly four years after his departure from public office and subsequent retreat to a private life abroad.
“At merely 70 years of age, Chief Obiano has ascended to the ranks of illustrious figures such as The Great Zik of Africa, whose purported demise was ultimately unfounded and baseless.”
Additionally, another assistant of the former governor, identifying himself as Onyebuchi Okpala, posted on Facebook: “Please, my fellow Anambra people, disregard the false information circulating on social media.”
His Excellency Chief William Mmaduaburochukwu Obiano remains alive. Kindly disregard the false reports regarding the demise of our principal and Boss Akpokuedike Global. It is not accurate; Akpokuedike is alive. We beseech for enhanced well-being and joy.
Obiano, who governed Anambra from 2014 to 2022, had relocated to Houston, Texas, where he has lived since after his retirement as a top staff member of Fidelity Bank, before becoming governor.
He is standing trial before a Federal High Court for allegedly mismanaging the sum of N4 billion as governor of Anambra State. He hails from Aguleri in Anambra East Local Government Area and is the immediate past governor of the state.
