In a recent statement, Minister of Education Tunji Alausa reversed his prior claim that the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) did not reach an agreement. Alausa reiterated that the 2009 FGN-ASUU agreement is valid and enforceable.

Friday, the ministry issued a statement clarifying that the 2009 agreement is currently enforceable and in place.

After making remarks to journalists in Abuja on Thursday in which he claimed that the ASUU stance is only a draft and that no agreement had been signed, prompting an instant response from the union, he was asked to clarify his remarks.

The minister went on to say that the accords from 2009 and 2011, to which ASUU frequently alludes, were never officially signed but were merely suggestions put forth during talks.
