Delta at 34: Activist to Gov. Oborevwori: The anniversary is a moment for contemplation, not partying.

Derrick Oritsematosan Agberen, a human rights activist, has warned Governor Sheriff Oborevwori not to have “lavish and unnecessary celebrations” in honour of Delta State’s 34th anniversary.

The governor should use the anniversary to reflect on the state government’s “subpar performance” and its detrimental effects on the lives of regular inhabitants, according to Agberen’s open letter to him.

Practical steps to improve Deltans’ welfare should be the administration’s goal, he argued.

He asserted that the key to a secure and wealthy state lies in industrialisation and manufacturing firms.

Because hunger is a major cause of insecurity and other social problems in the state, “they will help poor families get food, which will lower poverty and crime rates.”

It has been a great misfortune for the majority of Deltans over the last 34 years to have a state government that has been so focused on enriching itself at the expense of the rest of the people, he added. All of us can see the telltale signs of poor leadership in Delta State.

“From the embarrassingly weak healthcare system to the horrible level of opportunities for youths to thrive despite our God-given resources,” he boasts.

Governments both old and new have failed to adequately invest in infrastructure like roads and skill development programs, and industrialisation has not happened.

Foreign investors cannot take advantage of any possibilities to enhance our local economy, particularly those that would stimulate agriculture and other sectors.

Raising awareness of the plight of Delta State’s indigenous people is the surest approach to show that you care about their future.

“The people or the economy of Delta State are not being supported by the current level of infrastructure development, and the state is experiencing severe difficulties.”

Agberen extended his congratulations to the state on the occasion of its 34th anniversary.

“We, the Deltans, are holding out hope for change and advancement within the state, and we are keeping our eyes peeled as watchdogs, fiercely rejecting any plot by the government to keep us backward and poor.”
