Attorneys petition Tinubu for pardon on behalf of Abba Kyari

Detained Deputy Commissioner of Police, DCP, Abba Kyari, has been petitioned for presidential clemency by lawyers representing The Blue Pen. President Bola Tinubu has been asked to consider the request.

In their request for a presidential pardon, Kyari’s attorneys highlighted his track record of service in Nigeria’s battle against terrorism and violent crime.

The open letter, which was received by newsmen on Tuesday, requested a presidential pardon and was dated June 25, 2025. Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice (SAN) Lateef Fagbemi were copied on the letter signed by group leader Adamu Kabiru Adamu Esq.

As attorneys who work to promote national justice and reconciliation, we write to respectfully request that you consider clemency for Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Abba Kyari on behalf of the concerned citizens. We ask that you do so with the utmost respect and humility.

Throughout his years of service to our wonderful nation, DCP Abba Kyari has consistently demonstrated exceptional leadership. Served his country with extraordinary bravery, devotion, distinction, and devotion before his current legal dilemma. He made several important contributions in the fight against terrorism, violent crimes, and other security threats that endangered Nigeria’s unity and peace.

His actions, especially in spearheading operations that demolished criminal networks, have prevented needless deaths and restored faith in the Nigerian Police Force during crucial moments, the letter stated.

“Operations led to the successful dismantling of numerous criminal syndicates and contributed immensely to improving national security,” the lawyers claimed of Kyari, adding that this was especially true during a period of widespread unrest in the country.

Several national and international accolades were bestowed upon him for his efforts.

“Taking into account his prior sacrifices, experience, and the present insecurity issues confronting the nation, we firmly feel that granting clemency at this juncture will serve the larger national interest, even if we are steadfast in our commitment to maintaining the rule of law.

Justice can be tempered with mercy, especially when the individual in question has made significant sacrifices for national security. Your magnanimity in this matter would show that your administration is sympathetic and convince Nigerians that this is possible. Also, in situations where the safety and unity of the nation are in jeopardy.

According to the Constitution, clemency is an act of kindness, reconciliation, and national healing, not a rejection of justice. At a time when public mistrust and instability are on the rise in Nigeria, this kind of selfless gesture can go a long way towards restoring faith in the government and bringing the country together.

Given the circumstances, we respectfully implore Your Excellency to grant presidential mercy to DCP Abba Kyari out of compassion and patriotism.

Such an act would be in keeping with Your Excellency’s pledge to help the country heal, and it would also be a powerful symbol of how much Nigeria appreciates and celebrates her brave service members, no matter how difficult their times may be.

“We have faith in your ability to lead, advise, and administer justice with a fatherly sense to grant this request the serious and compassionate consideration it merits,” the letter continued.

In the midst of Kyari’s continuing trial, many Nigerians have been demanding his freedom.

With the country’s security situation deteriorating, many Nigerians are calling for forgiveness and the reintegration of Kyari into the security apparatus so that they can resume their struggle against kidnapping and terrorism.

“The President would be accomplishing a significant political objective in the run-up to 2027 among Nigerians who hold Abba Kyari in high esteem for his role in combating the widespread insecurity that has befallen the nation,” the attorneys stressed.
