The deductions made from teachers’ September wages must be refunded immediately by direction of Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris.
This information was shared with reporters in Birnin Kebbi by Murtala Usman, the state chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).
He stated that the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) lodged complaints over unjustified deductions, prompting the congress to take action.
He asserts that the deductions were authenticated as professional registration payments for the Teachers Registration Council (TRC) after an investigation verified it.

Afterwards, the NLC delegates met with Governor Idris, as well as the Education and Finance Ministries.
It came to light that the governor was neither consulted nor given advance notice of the deduction.
“As a result, the governor issued an order to reimburse the affected teachers for the deductions immediately,” Usman stated.
He went on to say that the Governor has cautioned various government departments against withholding salaries without proper authorisation, including the Ministry of Finance.
According to the NLC chairman, Idris’s prompt action helped prevent potential industrial disturbance in the state.
In addition, he stressed the need of employees always going via their unions to get their grievances addressed.
