Gov. Sule said that politicians praised Buhari when he was in power and made fun of him after he left.

Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State believes that at the time that former President Muhammadu Buhari was in office, he was surrounded by people who were only there to praise him.

The governor said this on Saturday at the 2nd Raymond Dokpesi Diamond Lecture put on by the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations in Abuja.

Sule says he saw how politicians praised Buhari while he was in administration, only to turn against him once he left office.

“I’ve seen what sycophancy can do as a governor.” People have literally sat in front of President (Muhammadu) Buhari and told him, “Oh, you are the best ever.” No one can do this better.

“But as soon as Buhari left office, they started saying, ‘Oh, he was one of the worst presidents we’ve ever had.’

“These are the same people, but at different times.” Sule remarked, “That’s what sycophancy is all about.”

Governor Sule also praised the late media mogul Chief Raymond Dokpesi for having the guts to start the country’s first commercial radio and TV stations during the military regime.

He said that during that time, the government controlled almost everything.

“We’re here to honour a media icon.” He went on to say, “Dokpesi wasn’t afraid to tell the truth to those in power, even when things were hard.”
