Two Ansaru commanders who were caught will be arraigned by the Nigerian government.

On Thursday, in Abuja’s Federal High Court, the two senior members of the Ansaru terrorist group—a network linked to Al-Qaeda—will be arraigned by the federal government.

Abubakar Abba (also known as Isah Adam or Mahmud Al-Nigeri) and Mahmud Muhammed Usman (also known as Abu Bara’a or Abbas Mukhtar) are the two commanders.

Judgement on a 32-count terrorism-related accusation will be handed down by Justice Emeka Nwite against Abu Bara’a and Mahmud Al-Nigeri, better known as Mallam Mamuda.

In the case indicated as FHC/ABJ/CR/464/2025, the first defendant is Abu Bara’a, and the second defendant is Mahmud Al-Nigeri.

Federal Director of Public Prosecutions M.B. Abubakar, representing the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice of the Federation, filed the charge on September 4.

The first allegation alleges that between 2013 and 2015, two individuals—Abu Bara’a of Okene Local Government Area, LGA, in Kogi State, and Mahmud Al-Nigeri of Daura LGA, Katsina State—aided and abetted terrorist actions.

The two were held on charges of collaborating and deciding to join forces with the banned Nigerian terrorist group Jama’atu Ansarul Muslimeena Fii Bilaadis Sudan, also known as JAMBS/Ansaru.

The allegation states that by doing so, you have committed an offence that is punished under Section 17 of the Terrorism (Prevention) (Amendment) Act, 2013, which is also punishable under the same section.

Defendants were indicted in counts three and four for allegedly attending terrorist training camps to learn how to handle weapons and make IEDs (Improvised Explosive Devices).

The fifth count stated that they received training on military strategy from the Mali terrorist group Jama’atu Nusratil Islami Wal Muslimin, also known as JNIM, and that this training was a prelude to terrorist operations.

Count seven further stated that the individuals in question were complicit in the 2022 assault on the Nigerian Army’s Wawa Cantonment in Kainji, New-Bussa, Borgu LGA, Niger State, which led to numerous casualties.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, Abu Bara’a and Mahmud Al-Nigeri were apprehended by the Nigerian security and intelligence agencies in May and July 2025 during a daring operation that was led by intelligence.

While briefing reporters in Abuja on August 16, National Security Adviser Malam Nuhu Ribadu made the statement.

The males who were apprehended, according to Ribadu, were on terror watch lists on a national and international level.

A number of high-profile attacks and kidnappings that occurred around the nation were supposedly carried out by the Ansaru terrorist group.
